Some 410 wooden tablets which were used by the Romans like paper for note-taking, accounts, correspondence and legal documents, have been discovered in Central London, 87 of which have been deciphered to reveal names, events, business and legal dealings and evidence of someone practicing writing the alphabet and numerals.
A solo exhibition of work by Chinese ink artist Qin Feng unfolds across three locations in Venice from May 19 until June 19, 2016. ‘Waiting For Qin Feng’ is installed at the former Monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore — now home to the Giorgio Cini Foundation; the Armenian catholic monastery on San Lazzaro Island; and Venice International University on San Servolo Island.
On May 18th, Najip Nakkash’s personal exhibition titled ‘Inspired by Tuqay’ will open at the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan. The exhibition is dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the great Tatar poet Ğabdulla Tuqay. The major part of the exposition is a series of works with Tuqay’s poems.
On April 30, 2016 the final class of the new children’s course “Calligraphy basics” was held at the National School of Calligraphy. Taught by the School’s teacher Artyom Lebedev, the kids had learned the basic writing, the Italian cursive script, and the main rules of lettering and text decoration.
Between April 25 and 28, the Arab World Institute in Paris hosted an Arabic calligraphy exhibition addressing human rights in Islamic culture. The exhibition was organised by the Qatar National Human Right Committee (NHRC) in collaboration with Qatar embassy in Paris.
Opening Friday, March 18 at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art (CA, USA) is new exhibit titled “Modern Twist: Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Sculpture,” which explores the innovative shape bamboo art has taken since the mid-20th century.
A workshop titled “An introduction to Calligraphy” was held in Kemerovo, Kuzbas region, over the last weekend. Dr. phil., art therapist Dmitry Turnov from Saint Petersburg arrived at the capital of Kuzbas Region to show the participants of the workshop most popular medieval scripts and contemporary scripts for broad-nib pen, pointed pen and paintbrush.
On the occasion of the International Women’s Day the team of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy prepared a special happening: during the whole day visitors of the Oldtimer Gallery could watch calligraphers signing custom calligraphy greeting cards.
On February 27, at 12.40 the Kultura TV channel will screen an item of the “Pryanichny Domik” (“Gingerbread Cottage”) TV show dedicated to manuscript books. The item was shot in the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy.
On one section of wall at the Independencia metro station under the banner "Views from Spain", notable monuments of Andalusia are displayed, including the Great Mosque of Cordoba -- one of the oldest structures still standing from the time when Muslims ruled the region.
