Calligraphy in Ecclesiastical Art – a workshop by Grigory Marakuyev

On December 27th at 14.00 the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy will host a workshop “Calligraphy in Ecclesiastical Art”. It will be taught by Grigory Marakuyev: iconographer, lettering artist, calligraphy teacher.

Grigory Marakuyev has made inscriptions for Kazan Cathedral in Moscow, Saint Nikander Cathedral in Pskov, Transfiguration Cathedral of the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery in Zvenigorod, Solovetsky Monastery and for many others. One of his latest works is the resurrection of historical inscriptions in the Host Resurrection Cathedral of the New Jerusalem Monastery.

We have been brought up learning classic European scripts, and the shapes of Old Russian scripts are indistinguishable for us. The master will help you discover the beauty of masterpieces of Old Slavonic writing. During the workshop you will learn a brief history of calligraphy in ecclesiastical art. Grigory Marakuyev will demonstrate the techniques of writing with a brush and some exercises that will help grasp the basics of Old Russian decorative writing, the rules of letter drawing and combining. Marakuyev believes that learning Old Russian writing is a good base for studying the Old Russian art in its richness.

We are looking forward to seeing you in the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy on December 27th, 2015 at 14.00!
