Grand Orthodox family festival opens in Sokolniki in Advent season
The 10th international Orthodox festival – Artos. The Christmas – has opened today in exhibit hall 2 in Sokolniki Exhibition and Convention Centre, offering numerous church music concerts, carols, movies and creative workshops to build the unique Christmas excitement feel.
The organizers have stored a plenty of reasons to attend the festival as a whole family. The central areas will host stands offering original and unique hand-made items and a wide variety of presents for friends and family, such as souvenirs, icons, jewellery and much more. Creative workshops welcome participants of all ages on a daily basis to master crafting of simple and impressive gifts. On Friday, December 15, Artos will introduce the art of icon painting – guided by a professional, each attendant will have a chance to make their first steps in creating a masterpiece and find out more about the canons of painting holy pictures, various traditional techniques and styles.
The festival will also grant a unique opportunity to discover a very traditional yet now receding, genre that used to be a must have of any folk festival in the Advent and Christmas season: Brodyachy Vertep (Strolling Creche) group will stage a family puppet show to tell the story of the Saviour's birth.
Overall the anniversary Artos will engage over 200 entrants from Russia and former CIS, Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Georgia and Israel.
The entire festival traditionally admits for free. The festival is held under the auspices of the Russian Orthodox Church and runs until December 18.
