June 22 is the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow

June 22, 1941 is a special day in the history of our country. On this day 79 years ago, the Great Patriotic War began; the bloodiest in the history of mankind. Misfortune came to every home, to every family. June 22 was forever the Day of memory and sorrow for our people.

Every year on June 22, on the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow, a nationwide action Candle of Remembrance takes place, candles are lit throughout the night in silence in memory of all those who died during World War II, protecting our peaceful life. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Candle of Remembrance is held in a new format; every Russian can light a candle online. And this is not just a gesture of memory: each virtual candle is 1 ruble, which will be allocated for the provision of medical assistance to the veterans of the Great Patriotic War.
