1950s
Las Vegas has long been a favorite recreation destination for millions of visitors. In the early 1950s, however, community leaders realized that the cyclical nature of tourism caused a significant decline in the number of visitors during the weekdays, throughout the summer months and over the Christmas season.
The initial goal was to increase the occupancy rates of hotels and to attract more visitors and convention attendees to the area during slow tourist months. A site was chosen one block east of the Las Vegas Strip at the site of the Las Vegas Park Speedway, a failed horse and automobile racing facility from the early 1950s.
