About the project:
From May 20th to June 30th, an unusual exhibition “Silver Age of Russian candy wrappers” to open on the basis of the Museum Quarter of Sokolniki Museum and Educational Centre. The exposition will be held in the framework of the Museum of World History of Packing in pavilion 7a.
A unique collection of Russian wrappers - packaging for candies and chocolate, produced by Russian confectioners in the late 19th - early 20th centuries, as well as the accompanying paraphernalia will be first presented at the exhibition. Materials for the exhibition are presented by the Moscow art collector and businessman, Viktor Kudryavtsev, and the Museum of World History of Packing.
It should be noted that in the late 19th - early 20th centuries, the confectionery market of the Russian Empire, was on the highest stage of development, literally it thrived. “Konfekty” (until 1917, according to the old orthography, known as candies) and other confectionery products enjoyed great popularity among the population. In Moscow alone, there were dozens of major confectionery companies. And how many of them were in St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Ekaterinburg, Kiev, Kharkov, Odessa and other cities of the vast empire, it is difficult to count. Most of the Russian confectionery products were well known and highly regarded throughout Europe and even in Asia.
Many large confectionery factories of our country were created in the 19th century. The best known among them are Moscow ones: “Red October” (formerly “Einem”) “Babaevskiy” (formerly “Abrikosov”), “Rot Front” (founded in the early last century by the Leonovs), “Bolshevik” (formerly known as “A.Siu and K”) and others.
The names of Russian confectioners erased after the October Revolution of 1917, from our history, have been unjustly forgotten. They survived only on the packages of that time at collectors’: on the boxes of candies, wrappers from chocolate and candy wrappers...
